My design philosophy follows that design and manufacturing are inseparable. With the popularity of 3D printers, I can bind design and technology closely together. For example, during the design process, the scaled-down model data produced using a home grade 3D printer can be directly used for physical manufacturing in a 3D printing factory, achieving perfect alignment between design and physical production.
Today, FDM is arguably the lowest cost 3D printing technology. I use FDM as an entry point to discuss how 3D printing has changed contemporary design and to demonstrate how design and manufacturing are inextricably linked. For FDM technology, the fill and contour-like layer pattern hidden beneath the surface is its most representative feature, while people see it as a rough flaw. In my work Infill Cahir, I present them in a positive light, transforming them into the unique visual language of FDM.

The three new products presented at the design exhibition are Crown Chair, Infill Chair and Fold Chair.
Crown Chair is a piece that shows FDM’s unique contour line ply pattern to the extreme. I have incorporated the ply pattern, which was originally seen as a flaw, into the shape of the product itself. The sharp back line brings out the texture of each ply, creating a unique aesthetic.
Infill Chair is a design work to show the internal filling of 3D printing, FDM technology will generate a mesh-like filling structure inside the model when printing, coupled with the semi-translucent nature of 3D printing PLA material, the internal filling can be seen through the outer wall when viewing the finished product. However, this kind of filling is often seen as a low-finish effect, so I transformed it into its unique visual language by means of design, so that it can be naturally integrated into the product.
The Fold Chair is my attempt at another extension of FDM technology, FFF, which offers faster printing speeds and higher strength, making it ideal for printing furniture with larger flow. To reflect the efficiency of this printing method, I designed the lines on its sides to be free stacking silk, as if making it was as easy and fast as stacking silk.
